A French silver cruet set dating from the 19th century, having in the shaft the engraved armorial shield for the Rothschild family. Probably ordered by Baron Wilhem Carl von Rothschild (1828-1901) to the renowned goldsmith Morel & Cie.
Chiselled and engraved "rococo" decoration of foliage, floral, trellis, garlands and scroll motifs. The silver frame features slots for the six cut glass cruets and for the respective stoppers. The centrally placed handle is decorated by dense asymmetrical curve and counter-curve naturalistic floral scrolls, and by a double cartouche depicting the Rothschild armorial shield. The four pierced feet scalloped base is decorated with engraved trellis and foliage scroll motifs.
Paris assay-marks for 1838-1972 (950/000).
Renowned French gold and silversmith, Jean-Valentin Morel (1794-1860) was an apprentice with Adrien Vachete, who supplied gold boxes to King Louis XVI and to Emperor Napoleon.
Master in 1827, Morel specialised in gold reliefs and fine hardstone inlays. In 1842 he settles at rue Neuve Saint Augustin, in Paris, founding Morel & Cie. His international reputation growing he moves to London in 1850, settling at 7 New Burlington Street. Given a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria, Morel returns to France (Sèvres) in 1852.
From amongst his production stands out Pope Gregory XVI’s prayer book, the King of Sardinia dinner set, commissions for the King of Holland William III and for Tzar Alexander II, the Count of Chambord snuff box, as well as the lapis-lazuli cup for the arts patron Duke of Luynes, with which Morel was awarded the Great Medal at the 1855 International Exhibition.
In addition to this trophy, he was also awarded a gold medal at the French Industrial Exhibition of 1844, and the Council Medal at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. In 1855 he was appointed a Knight of the Legion d’Honneur by Emperor Napoleon III.

Galheteiro em prata francesa, séc. XIX, com gravação das armas da família Rothschild, provavelmente uma encomenda do Barão Wilhem Carl von Rothschild (1828-1901), com a marca de ourives de Morel&Cie.
Corpo cinzelado e gravado, com decoração "rocaille", de motivos vegetalistas, treliça, grinaldas, flores e enrolamentos, com encaixe para seis galhetas e para seis tampas. Pega central em enrolamentos vegetalistas assimétricos em forma de "S", com flores naturalistas, e dupla cartela com gravação de armas da família Rothschild no fuste. Base recortada e decorada com treliça gravada e bordo com enrolamentos vegetalistas e medalhões, sobre quatro pés vazados em enrolamentos. Seis galhetas com tampas, em vidro facetado.
Com marca de contraste de Paris, em uso de 1838 a 1972, de 950 milésimos.
Importante ourives e prateiro francês, Jean-Valentin Morel (1794 -1860) foi aprendiz de Adrien Vachete, que produziu as caixas de ouro de Luís XVI e Napoleão.
Mestre em 1827, especializou-se em relevo em ouro e incrustações de alta qualidade em pedra dura. Em 1842, estabeleceu-se na rue Neuve Saint Augustin em Paris, fundando a Morel & Cie, que rapidamente ganhou reputação internacional. Muda-se para Londres em 1850 - 7 New Burlington Street - onde recebeu um mandado real da Rainha Vitória e regressou a França (Sevres) 1852
De entre os seus trabalhos destacamos o missal do Papa Gregório XVI , o serviço de mesa do Rei da Sardenha, peças para Guilherme III da Holanda e Alexandre II da Rússia , a caixa de rapé do Conde de Chambord e a xícara de lápis-lazúli para o patrono das artes Duc de Luynes, com que ganhou a grande medalha na Exposition Universelle (1855).
Para além desta medalha, foi premiado com medalha de ouro na Exposição Industrial Francesa de 1844, e Medalha do Conselho na Grande Exposição de 1851 tendo sido nomeado Cavaleiro da Legião de Honra de Napoleão III em 1855.
