Unusual deep plate decorated in cobalt-blue pigment on tin-white enamel. The circular well clearly defined by a band of alternating plain and fish scale sections. In the central roundel an aquatic scene with a fisherman, dressed in fashionably aristocratic attire from the Restoration of Independence period (1640), on an oriental style boat of stylised dolphin like prow or figure head. This unusual composition is completed by a fantastic landscape with rocks, vegetal elements and a large building, perhaps a church, of both European and Oriental characteristics, exemplified by the onion domed tower with battlements, resembling an Islamic temple. To the left of the central composition a small praying niche with a cross. In typical Kraak porcelain fashion, the lip is segmented into eight sections separated by the ever-present bow and seal columns. Four of these sections are filled by daisies which alternate with opposing pairs of oval frames1—replacing the usual Chinese artemisia leaves—encircling foliage and peaches and floral motifs. On the reverse nine plain, almost sketched details, suggesting petals centred by a large, stylised flowers, interspersed by vertical stripes. A similar fisherman figure on a boat, can be seen represented in an apothecary jar with the Portuguese Royal Arms and the date 1641, belonging to the collection at the Viana do Castelo, Museu de Artes Decorativas (Inv. 00426–MAD)2. In spite of its decorative composition being clearly inspired by Kraak-Wanli period porcelain, its specific associations and unusual characteristics make this plate a particularly rare example of taste, decorative range and creative fantasy of 17th century Portuguese faience.

Prato de singular decoração, com o covo ligeiramente acentuado, em esmalte branco decorado a azul-cobalto. O covo está delimitado por barra formada por sectores lisos que alternam com outros de escamas que encerram cena aquática com um pescador, vestido ao gosto da nobreza e alta-burguesia do tempo da Restauração de 1640, num barco de formato oriental e cuja proa parece sugerir um golfinho. Mais ao fundo, paisagem fantasiosa, preenchida por rochas, elementos vegetalistas e edifício que poderá ser uma igreja: embora o corpo tenha características europeias, os torreões são orientais, com uma cúpula ao gosto islâmico e uma torre com ameias, como se de mesquita se tratasse. À esquerda, um pequeno nicho com cruz, local provável de oração, enquanto se espera que o peixe morda o anzol. A aba está decorada ao gosto da porcelana Kraak, dividida em oito reservas, separadas pelos habituais colunelos com laços e selos. Nas reservas, quatro representações de boninas alternam com insólitas molduras ovais1, preenchidas por ramagens com pêssegos e duas apenas florais, que substituem as tradicionais folhas de artemísia chinesas. No tardoz da aba, apontamentos pintados, sumários, sugerem pétalas centradas por florões, entre riscos separadores. A cena de um pescador dentro de um barco aparece também representada no canudo de botica, datado de 1641, que ostenta na frente as Armas Reais Portuguesas, do Museu de Artes Decorativas de Viana do Castelo (Inv. 00426–MAD)2. Apesar de todos os elementos decorativos deste prato terem origem na composição das porcelanas da dinastia Wanli, a sua associação específica e o carácter menos habitual de alguns destes motivos tornam esta peça num exemplar muito representativo do gosto, da variedade decorativa e da fantasia criativa da faiança portuguesa do século XVII
