Large Portuguese hammered and grooved plain silver salver, with Lisbon assay-mark (L – 24.0 or L – 24.0a) registered 1694 – 1723and maker’s mark (L – 130) attributable to Manuel Martins de Almeida (1699 – 1723). Of elegant, scalloped rim, its aesthetical harmony is defined by its eighteen plainly grooved gadroons, diverging from an equally plain and raised central medallion, framed by a fluted convex profile. In addition to its unusual dimensions, it is also remarkable that this salver is fully marked. Effectively, many silver objects from the same period do not feature any maker’s or assay-marks, as the reinstatement of compulsory hallmarking for gold andsilver artifacts following the Philippine interregnum, happens towards the end of the 17th century, in the final years of King Pedro II reign, spreading gradually in time and across the kingdom’s spatial territory.
