João Coelho de Sampaio
Portuguese silver salver, D. José I (king 1750-1777) with a plain ground with an heraldic representation of a cartouche as crowned “Ave” and framed with a strip of wings, flowers and engraved foliage. Raised and scalloped edge with curvilinear surfaces alternating with wavy ribs, fins and stylized, drawn and chiselled scallops. The edge was riveted to the base. It rests on three elegant feet with windings topped with a shell.
Over the centuries, salvers have had different uses, from apparatus to tableware, with those uses, different models and heights have emerged. In the 17th and 1st part of the 18th century, the salvers had a high central foot for table service, then low pieces appeared with 3 or 4 feet for placing sweet objects and fruits, as is the case with this piece.
Certificate of Authenticity: Sofia Ruival and Henrique Braga.
